kveite or Atlantic halibut is a flatfish of the family Pleuronectidae. They are demersal fish living on or near sand, gravel or clay bottoms at depths of between 50 and 2,000 m. The halibut is among the largest teleost fish in the world, and is a threatened species due to a slow rate of growth and overfishing. Halibut is a saltwater fish. The halibut has a flat body with both eyes located on the right side of the head. In fact, the fish swim with the left side facing down to the bottom and the right side up. At the larval stage, it first has a normal body, which undergoes a morphological transformation (also called eye migration or metamorphosis ) when the larva develops into a fish. During the metamorphosis, the larva will lie on one side, first as a pelagic larva, and the side close to the bottom (called bottoming).
Fishing for halibut is regulated in Norwegian waters and in 2010 the minimum size was increased from 60 to 80 cm. There are also mesh limits. It is also forbidden to fish for halibut with nets , trawls and spinners during the spawning period (between 20 December and 31 March). However, it is permitted to fish for halibut with hook gear north of 62 ° N. Halibut caught with line typically have stumps with between 40 and 50 large hooks baited with herring or small saithe . Common bycatch is cod , tusk and also catfish . On rare occasions, halibut with cheat is also pulled up .
Sometimes large halibut rise to the surface and stay there for a long time. The cause of the phenomenon is little known, but probably has to do with the species’ eating habits. Usually the fish will dive if it feels threatened, but such a halibut of almost 200 kg was caught without the use of traditional fishing equipment outside a fish farm on Arnøya in Skjervøy municipality in February 2007.
